Net fee and commission income surged 277 per cent year-on-year to VNĐ3.83 trillion, extending the strong growth recorded in the first quarter.The stronger contribution from services helped diversify SHB's revenue base, reducing its reliance on lending income and improving the resilience of its business model amid changing market conditions.Operational efficiency also improved during the period. The bank's cost-to-income ratio (CIR) fell to 16 per cent, lower than a year earlier and among the lowest in the banking sector. SHB attributed the improvement to streamlined operations, digitalisation, higher productivity and more efficient customer service channels.As of June 30, SHB's total assets stood at VNĐ962.67 trillion, up 8 per cent from the end of 2025, moving closer to its target of VNĐ1 quadrillion in total assets.Customer deposits in Market I reached VNĐ687.84 trillion, an increase of 7 per cent from year-end, providing funding for business expansion and credit growth.The bank maintained liquidity ratios above regulatory requirements. Its liquidity reserve ratio was 17.05 per cent, compared with the State Bank of Vietnam's minimum requirement of 10 per cent, while the loan-to-deposit ratio (LDR) stood at 80.6 per cent, below the regulatory ceiling of 85 per cent.Outstanding credit reached VNĐ664.28 trillion, up 7.22 per cent from the end of 2025. SHB said lending growth remained selective, focusing on production, business activities and customer segments aligned with its strategic priorities.The bank also continued to maintain asset quality, with its non-performing loan (NPL) ratio held at 1.76 per cent as of the end of June.Strengthening capital baseSHB's capital adequacy ratio (CAR) remained at around 12 per cent on a consolidated basis, comfortably above the regulatory minimum of 8 per cent.During the period, the bank issued more than 750 million new shares, raising its charter capital to VNĐ53.44 trillion. SHB said the capital increase would strengthen its financial capacity, support future growth and enhance its ability to meet increasingly stringent capital requirements. Upon completion of the relevant procedures, the bank expects to become the fourth-largest private commercial bank in Việt Nam by charter capital.The bank is also advancing the divestment of its remaining 50 per cent stake in consumer finance company SHBFinance to Krungsri, a member of Japan's MUFG Group, following regulatory approval for the company's legal restructuring. The transaction is expected to be completed in the middle of the third quarter of 2026.According to SHB, the deal will strengthen its financial resources, deepen cooperation with its strategic partner in retail banking and allow the bank to focus more on its core banking operations and long-term growth strategy.The bank has also continued to diversify its funding sources through international partnerships. In 2025, SHB successfully secured two medium-term ESG-linked syndicated loans worth a combined US$600 million from 26 international financial institutions. The bank said the facilities would provide medium-term foreign currency funding while supporting the development of sustainable finance.Digital transformation and long-term strategyBuilding on its first-half results, SHB said it will continue implementing its long-term strategy centred on governance, technology, asset quality, operational efficiency and capital strength.The bank's transformation programme is built on four strategic pillars: customer and market focus; reform of mechanisms, policies and processes; people development; and information technology modernisation and digital transformation. It is also pursuing a "5 FIRST" technology strategy comprising Data &amp; AI First, People First, Cloud First, Security First and Mobile First to accelerate digital banking development.SHB said it will continue expanding its customer ecosystem by working with major corporations, State-owned and private enterprises, as well as organisations in healthcare, education and other sectors, while developing products for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and retail customers.The bank's transformation efforts have also received international recognition. Current priorities include developing strategic technology enterprises, expanding the digital economy and creating a more favorable environment for research commercialisation and innovation.MoST is also introducing new mechanisms to commission large-scale research projects targeting national development challenges. To date, the ministry has received 31 proposals for strategic technology missions and continues to refine funding and evaluation procedures to encourage research with greater commercial potential.Innovation indicators continued to improve during July. Việt Nam climbed five places to rank 50th in the 2026 Global Startup Ecosystem Index, while the country now has 964 certified science and technology enterprises and 46 innovation support organisations.Digital transformation remained another bright spot. The National Data Exchange Platform has processed more than 4.6 billion transactions, and 32.5 million digital signature certificates have been issued nationwide. MoST is also expanding regulatory sandbox mechanisms to help emerging technologies reach the market more quickly and support the development of the digital economy.Việt Nam's digital infrastructure also continued to strengthen. Mobile broadband speed reached 210.85 Mbps, ranking ninth globally, while IPv6 adoption rose to 67 per cent, the second-highest level in Southeast Asia. The country now has more than 81,600 digital technology enterprises, as the government advances policies supporting artificial intelligence, digital assets and next-generation digital industries.Scientific research maintained solid momentum during the month. Vietnamese researchers published 2,658 papers indexed in the Scopus database, while MoST allocated VNĐ292 billion to research projects and continued building a national mechanism for strategic technology development.The ministry also highlighted progress in bringing advanced technologies into practical use. During July, it launched a nationwide pilot of an artificial intelligence platform supporting public administration and successfully tested a drone detection and counter-UAV system at Đà Nẵng International Airport, demonstrating efforts to accelerate the commercialisation and deployment of strategic technologies.Looking ahead, MoST said it will work with ministries and local governments to identify major national challenges that can be addressed through Vietnamese-developed technologies.The ministry also plans to continue supporting innovative enterprises, expanding the science and technology market, completing the National Portal for Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Transformation Initiatives, and implementing the Government's 100-day action plan to remove bottlenecks in digital transformation.Concluding the press conference, Deputy Minister Phương said science, technology, innovation and digital transformation must deliver measurable economic value by improving productivity, strengthening business competitiveness and creating new momentum for sustainable growth. The country is now preparing a strategy to build an advanced materials industry that could underpin its next phase of industrialisation.The Government is drafting a national strategy for the materials industry through 2030 and with a longer-term vision extending to 2045, seeking to shift the country's competitive advantage from abundant natural resources to technological capability and high-value manufacturing.Experts say the strategy represents a broader change in industrial policy, as advanced materials are viewed not just as industrial inputs, but as strategic assets that determine competitiveness in sectors ranging from semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI) to renewable energy, the defence industry and biotechnology."Competition is no longer confined to finished products. It increasingly revolves around raw materials, deep-processing technologies, standards, data and supply chains," said Đỗ Nam Bình, head of the Minerals and Metallurgy Division at the Industry Agency under the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT)."The level of materials industry development directly reflects a country's level of industrialisation, scientific and technological capacity, and ability to achieve self-reliance," he said."Industries such as semiconductors, AI, batteries and energy storage, offshore wind power, electric vehicles, the defence industry, biomedicine and pharmaceuticals are all heavily dependent on advanced materials," Bình said.“Against a backdrop of growing global geopolitical uncertainty, mastering strategic materials has become critical for Việt Nam to strengthen national power, safeguard economic independence and create momentum for a breakthrough in the digital era,” he said.For Việt Nam, the challenge is not a lack of resources. The 19th century was defined by coal and steel, the 20th century by oil, polymers and advanced alloys, while the 21st century is increasingly being shaped by advanced materials such as nanomaterials, semiconductor materials and biomaterials.Nguyễn Thanh Hải, chairwoman of the National Assembly's Committee on Science, Technology and Environment, has stressed the strategic importance of materials alongside the mechanical engineering and manufacturing industries as Việt Nam enters a new stage of development.She said these industries would form the backbone needed to achieve the country's development goals for 2030 and 2045, while underpinning national priorities, including the North-South high-speed railway, nuclear power, semiconductor manufacturing, defence industry, national data centres, digital infrastructure, renewable energy and other emerging technologies.Yet for all its ambitions, Việt Nam had faced a fundamental industrial dilemma: it has abundant raw materials to build strategic industries, but lacks the technological depth and industrial scale to fully convert those resources into high-value products.Hải said that after four decades of economic reform, Việt Nam had built a relatively broad materials industry, covering construction materials, metals, chemicals, plastics and some high-tech materials, but had yet to turn it into a foundational industry as expected.This shift was being held back by fragmented policies, the lack of a comprehensive national strategy, shortages of skilled workers and weak links between research, innovation and commercialisation, she said.Now, the main challenge was to move beyond resource extraction and basic manufacturing towards deeper processing, technological self-reliance and higher-value industrial production.New approach<figure class="table"><table><tbody><tr><td><figure class="image"><img src="https://image.vietnamnews.vn/uploadvnnews/Article/2026/7/30/517833_material%20semi.jpg" alt=""></figure></td></tr><tr><td>Chips and semiconductor equipment on display. <figure class="table"><table><tbody><tr><td><figure class="image"><img src="https://image.vietnamnews.vn/uploadvnnews/Article/2026/7/24/518603_wood.jpg" alt=""></figure></td></tr><tr><td>Participants attend the conference to remove difficulties and promote sustainable raw materials for wood processing industry on Thursday.&nbsp;— VNS Photo&nbsp;</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>HÀ NỘI — Sustainable, transparent and traceable raw materials are becoming increasingly important for Việt Nam's wood processing industry to achieve an export target of US$25 billion by 2030, industry officials and experts said at a conference on July 23.The target of $25 billion could be beyond reach if the industry continues to rely on short-term sources and imported raw materials, said Bùi Trung Nghĩa, deputy chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI)."Shifting towards sustainable forestry, becoming self-sufficient in raw materials, upgrading the value chain and optimising ecological efficiency per hectare of forest will determine the long-term position of Việt Nam's wood industry amid volatile global trade," Nghĩa said.Future growth would depend more on quality, productivity and the ability to meet strict market standards than on expanding production volumes, he added.He stressed that sustainable raw materials would help businesses improve competitiveness, secure supplies, reduce reliance on imports and increase the value of deeply processed wood products.The coordination among the State, local governments, exporters, associations and farmers is critical to develop sustainable raw materials source, he said.Nguyễn Văn Diện, deputy director of the Forestry and Forest Protection Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, said the key challenge was maintaining rapid industry growth while ensuring sustainability amid the shift towards green trade.Domestic forestry supplied about 78 per cent of the industry's wood-processing demand during 2021-25, while Việt Nam has nearly 4.9 million ha of planted forests, he said.Sustainability: the keyHowever, advantages in price and production capacity alone were no longer sufficient as global markets increasingly focused on the quality and sustainability of supply chains."The Vietnamese wood industry must shift from thinking about having enough raw materials for production to securing legal, transparent, responsible and sustainable sources, and from exporting large volumes to exporting high-value products," Diện said.He said the industry still faced bottlenecks including limited areas of large-timber forests, a low proportion of forests with sustainable management certification, incomplete digitalisation of raw-material data, weak links between forest growers and businesses, insufficient deep processing and low technology levels among many companies.The forestry authority plans to focus on developing large-timber raw-material areas, expanding certified sustainable forests, digitalising traceability systems, improving forest credit and insurance mechanisms, developing carbon credit markets and increasing the use of legal domestic timber, Diện said.He added that the second half of 2026 would be critical for upgrading the industry's value chain and strengthening the position of Vietnamese wood products.New international regulations, including the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), the Renewable Energy Directive III (RED III), Net Zero commitments and environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards are putting greater pressure on exporters to obtain sustainability certifications.Bùi Thị Nha Trang, from Control Union Vietnam, said international markets were increasingly demanding not just wood products but also data proving their legal origin, traceability and carbon footprint.She said that certifications such as FSC, PEFC, ISCC, GGL and SBP are becoming strategic assets in supply-chain management.Phạm Đình Thắng, chairman of Triệu Thái Sơn Company,&nbsp;said the biggest challenge for processors was securing stable, legal and high-quality raw materials for deep processing.He pointed out that for around three tonnes of fresh acacia wood, exporting it as woodchips generates about VNĐ3 million ($114), while producing wood pellets can generate around VNĐ6 million. Processing the timber into plywood and making use of by-products can generate more than VNĐ20 million, Thắng said, highlighting the importance of deep processing to retain more value-added production in Việt Nam.Exporters agreed that policies needed to be improved together with closer links between the Government, businesses and forest growers to provide sustainable raw-material supplies and reduce reliance on unstable short-term sources.Việt Nam's wood and wood product exports totalled more than $17 billion in 2025, making the country the world's fifth-largest, Asia's second largest and Southeast Asia's largest wood exporter. adapt to increasingly demanding international standards.While the country exported a record US$70 billion worth of agricultural products in 2025, fragmented production, limited access to technical support and cumbersome certification procedures remain major challenges, particularly for smallholders.New requirements such as the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) are also increasing pressure on exporters to provide reliable digital records and end-to-end traceability, creating demand for AI-enabled certification tools such as V-Standard.V-Standard enables farmers to digitise production management by recording farm activities, managing crop seasons and production areas, uploading supporting documents and monitoring compliance with certification requirements.The platform also generates QR codes for product traceability and is designed to connect with Việt Nam's National Product Traceability Portal.A mobile application allows users to maintain electronic farm diaries, upload evidence through images or documents and use voice input and optical character recognition (OCR) to simplify record-keeping and reduce paperwork.For cooperatives and certification bodies, the system centralises production records and supporting documents, streamlining administrative procedures and improving the efficiency of certification management.According to the project team, the technology can reduce on-site assessment and certification time by around 40 per cent while improving transparency across agricultural supply chains.Consumers can also verify product origins through the national traceability portal.Pilot implementation has produced encouraging results.As of May 2026, the platform had been used to manage data for more than 127 crop seasons and 147 agricultural products, with 230 registered user accounts connecting farmers, cooperatives, buyers and certification organisations.Nineteen cooperatives have participated in certification activities, uploading more than 1,000 supporting documents and 620 monitoring reports through the system.The project has also provided training for about 450 participants, including women and members of ethnic minority communities, helping strengthen digital skills and improve compliance with certification requirements.STAMEQ Chairman Nguyễn Nam Hải said the project had demonstrated the commission's capacity to develop digital systems that met international standards while addressing the practical needs of Vietnamese farmers.Following the handover, the platform will continue to be upgraded and expanded by STAMEQ, with plans to integrate it more closely with the national quality infrastructure and traceability system to support the digital transformation of Việt Nam's agricultural sector.The project is As the country races to expand renewable energy capacity and meet rising electricity demand, authorities are working to remove institutional bottlenecks and develop the infrastructure needed to turn ambitious plans into reality.The Southeast Asian nation aims to bring between 6 gigawatts (GW) and 17GW of offshore wind power capacity online by 2030, with offshore wind expected to account for about 14.7-16.6 per cent of the country's power generation mix by 2050, according to the revised Power Development Plan VIII.Việt Nam has significant offshore wind potential due to its long coastline of more than 3,260 kilometres, favourable wind conditions and rising energy demand. Authorities hope to attract investors with strong financial resources, advanced technology and international experience to help achieve the country's renewable energy ambitions.According to Trần Hoài Trang, deputy director general of the Ministry of Industry and Trade's Electricity Regulatory Authority of Vietnam, sea areas have recently been allocated with a combined potential capacity of around 7GW to investors for project preparation, marking an initial step toward achieving the country's offshore wind targets.The National Assembly issued Resolution 253 in 2025, which establishes mechanisms and policies for national energy development during 2026-30, including measures designed to support offshore wind projects.Authorities are continuing to refine the legal framework governing offshore wind development while implementing projects that have already received sea area allocations."Việt Nam is proceeding cautiously because this is a new sector," Trang told congthuong.vn, saying that projects must be successful in practice, generating benefits for investors while contributing to national development.Việt Nam is targeting double-digit economic growth in the coming years, and offshore wind power is expected to play an important role in supporting that objective.Policy reformsThe revised Power Development Plan VIII includes provisions for both offshore wind generation and related infrastructure, including transmission networks, energy hubs, ports and logistics facilities.Việt Nam is also preparing amendments to the Electricity Law aimed at improving transparency and creating more favourable conditions for investors, covering procedures from project approval to construction quality management, according to Trang.Specific provisions for offshore wind development are expected to be included in a draft amendment scheduled for submission in October 2026.
